Blocked Boss

A vacation should not revolve around work.

Vacations are intended to be a time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and escape from the daily grind. Taking a vacation allows you to disconnect from your work responsibilities and focus on self-care. Taking time off to relax and recharge can boost your overall well-being and productivity when you return to work. However, in today’s fast-paced society, many people struggle to completely disconnect from work while on vacation.

To fully benefit from vacation time, it is necessary to set boundaries and prioritise self-care. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can contribute to a more fulfilling vacation experience. That sounds great in theory, but it can be difficult to implement when your boss is constantly bothering you about overtime or extra shifts. I understand that many companies tout how they treat their employees like family, but it is never as fantastical as it sounds, and they simply want you to sacrifice your actual family time for them.

In this particular story, that is exactly what is happening. Scroll down to take a look for yourself.

A vacation is supposed to be an enjoyable time for an individual.

OP and her boyfriend are in a long-distance relationship, which means they can’t always see each other.

OP was ready to meet her partner and had already requested time off for the vacation.

OP was just about to head off when her new boss stopped her to ask whether she could cover a shift.

OP was already exhausted, so she rejected the extra shift and tried to go out.

OP explained that she was busy and that she was going to pick up her boyfriend, but the new boss wasn’t having it.

He got even angrier and called her a lousy worker, which she accepted and walked past him.

She told him that she would see him after five days, but he kept calling her to come back to work on the phone.

OP decided to block her boss because she wasn’t going to have a peaceful time without doing that.

OP just wanted to spend time with her boyfriend, and the boss was being a constant nuisance.

When she finally got back to work, the boss had a lot to say.

This is how the OP ended up on Reddit, asking whether she messed up.

The story thankfully doesn’t end there, and we got an update where she reported the boss to HR.

As it turns out, the boss had tried to ask her out before as well and had been rejected.

At the end of the day, the boss was fired, and he got what he deserved.

I am glad OP and her partner had a good time on their vacation. I understand that the boss was understaffed, but this behaviour goes so far beyond my comprehension. When the OP declined the extra shift, things should have ended there. It is completely unreasonable for the boss to keep pressuring the OP. The way the boss acted was also extremely unprofessional, and while blocking your boss is not a good idea, I believe the OP did the right thing here.

It is not the OP’s responsibility to get the boss used to his new position, so I believe the entire mess is his fault. Well, at least he was fired at the end.

Most people in the comments were on her side.

It was not OP’s responsibility to help her boss.

The boss was being highly unprofessional.

I would also like to know this, but I am guessing we never will.

A vacation is supposed to be for your family and friends, not work.

What are your thoughts on what the OP did? Do you think blocking the boss was too harsh, and she should not have tried to help him? Or do you think the OP made the correct decision by blocking the boss? What would you have done if you were in the OP’s position and your boss kept bothering you?
