Living with parents after college has become common among young adults. A college degree often isn’t enough to land a job, making it hard for graduates to afford rent. As a result, many return home while figuring out their next steps.
Most parents welcome their children back and support them during this transition. However, some parents struggle with their kids’ lack of independence at age 22, leading to tension. This seems to be the case in a Reddit story where parents demanded their daughter pay rent and work as a maid in their house. She wanted to save money after college, but this arrangement caused friction.

1. Let’s find out!

2. OP lives with her parents and pays rent by doing all the house chores.

3. The arrangement is tiresome but is allowing OP to save money, so she is fine with it. However, recently, things changed.

4. Recently, OP’s parents asked her to start paying the rent. She agreed and stopped focusing on the chores anymore, which became another problem as her mom highlighted her slacking on the chores.

5. OP assumed that now that she was paying rent in monetary terms, she didn’t have to do it by doing house chores, so she stopped doing them.

6. When OP’s mom called her ungrateful for not supporting, she started exploring potential options to move out.

7. The dad was yet to know about this, and OP’s mom threatened her that he wouldn’t be in a good mood when he heard about it.

OP needs to move out. What kind of parents are these? Who makes their own child pay to live with them? I am sorry, but if you consider your child a burden on you, then you shouldn’t have had him/her in the first place.
Terrible parenting! OP should move out because she in no way is an AH here!

8. In an update, the OP shared that she finally had the “big talk” with her parents after her dad came home.

9. Her dad understood OP’s concern but still favored the new arrangement, calling it a great deal for her.

10. The parents never gave OP an exact reason for why they now wanted her to pay. OP found this unreasonable and wanted to move out as soon as possible.

11. OP’s decision to move out wasn’t liked by her parents either. The mom started crying.

12. The dad gave OP time to calm down and rethink her decision. OP shared that she was the calmest of the three parties involved during the whole situation.

13. Move out, OP.

14. Don’t let them guilt trip you, OP. They should be the ones paying you.

20. I cannot even fathom the fact that two parents are making their children pay/work to live with them.
