Manager Tells Employee To Choose Between Getting Fired Or Shutting Up, Asks If He Went Too Far

A 29-year-old manager shared a dilemma on Reddit involving a bold 34-year-old team member who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, even to the director. During a tense conference call, she openly criticized the boss, leaving OP in a tough spot. OP’s ultimatum to the worker was to either stop speaking up or rethink her future with the company.

1. It depends on what the employee wasn’t shutting her mouth about. Let’s dive in!

2. There is an employee in OP’s team, 5 years older than him, who he doesn’t like for being loud.

3. She openly speaks her mind and doesn’t care what others would think.

4. The director (OP’s boss) often overburdens everyone with work, and she doesn’t hesitate to speak rudely about him either.

5. OP shared that the boss has a very relaxed arrangement and gives ample time to complete the extra work he gives.

The woman is not his child who OP can shut up when he wants. She is a grown, professional employee voicing her opinion, loudly, against the unfair burden of work. These concerns should ideally have been raised by OP directly to the director. But when you don’t stand up for your workers, they are left with no option but to stand up for themselves.

6. OP has repeatedly told the worker not to speak ill of the director, right in his face.

7. In a conference, the director became a bit passive-aggressive again about the work, and the worker responded back in the same manner.

8. OP realizes the director doesn’t have the best of attitudes towards the employees, but he’s the boss, and there isn’t much you can say to one unless you are that coworker.

9. OP told her to either keep her mouth shut going forward, or he would have to fire her. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.
