Adopting a child is not a simple decision.

Adopting a child is a life-altering decision that requires careful thought and planning. Before starting the adoption process, you should consider your motivations, expectations, and readiness to provide a loving and stable home for a child in need. Taking the time to thoroughly evaluate your reasons for adoption, as well as understand the challenges and responsibilities that come with it, can help ensure a successful and fulfilling adoption.

While adopting a needy child is unquestionably a good thing, it does not imply that everyone is prepared for it. Many older children can have a variety of issues as a result of losing their biological parents or being abandoned, and they may require extensive therapy. So I don’t see anything wrong with not being prepared or able to handle it. It is critical to prioritise the child’s well-being over all else. But you shouldn’t have to give up yourself for that. Before committing to adoption, you must be honest with yourself about your capabilities and limitations. That is something OP never had the opportunity to consider.

The title makes OP sound like a heartless monster, but you will understand once you read the full story.

OP and her husband have two kids, and another named Kelly joined when her father, who is her husband’s brother, passed away.

It was clear that Kelly had a lot of unhealed trauma, but OP’s husband eventually started acting like Kelly was their adopted daughter.

According to OP, Kelly isn’t easy to deal with, and she apparently bullies OP’s kids.

Kelly also feels like she is the golden child, and she does indeed get preferential treatment from OP’s husband.

Before you say it, they’re already going to family therapy, but nothing is working out for them.

Kelly clearly needs a significant amount of therapy, but the responsibility shouldn’t be forced upon OP.

Kelly clearly has no respect for OP’s kids and acts like that as well.

OP had enough and told her husband and Kelly to get out of the house and that she wanted a divorce.

They did leave the house, and OP didn’t hesitate to say that it was Kelly’s and her husband’s fault that all of this happened.

Her husband isn’t happy and is calling her heartless for acting like this towards Kelly.

At first glance, it may appear that the OP is heartless for putting all of this on the child, but I believe it is the husband’s fault. It is not acceptable to impose your wants on your wife without first discussing them with her. And while I understand your desire to care for your brother’s child, expecting your wife to shoulder all of that responsibility is unreasonable. He should have talked it over with her before essentially adopting a child. It is also clear that he only wants to reconnect with her because he is unable to care for his niece on his own right now.

Divorce does seem to be in their future.

It is not a decision that he alone can make.

I can’t make sense of the husband’s behaviour.

I wonder if Kelly is actually the husband’s child.

Kelly does have more family, but she doesn’t want to meet them.

It is clear that he wants OP back since he can’t handle Kelly now.

The husband needs to open his eyes and look at everything clearly.

I will have to agree with this commenter.

OP’s actual children should be her priority.
