And there is a reason behind that. You see, the icon known as Freddie Mercury absolutely loved his adorable kittens and treated them as if the cats were his own flesh and blood. His love for cats started when his girlfriend Mary Austin got him two cats, Tom and Jerry, in 1978. According to the people in his tour bus, he used to call his girlfriend at home to ask how the cats were regularly as she was the one taking care of the adorable creatures while he was away touring.
His love for cats only grew after that. As you probably know, he has had many cats after that. He had as many as 10 cats at one time and he paid attention equally to each and every one of them. He also used to talk to the cats when his girlfriend put them on the phone which was just adorable. And I am not saying he treated his cats as his children without any reason. You see, he used to give Christmas gifts filled with treats to every one of his cats.
He’d get to a hotel, we’d dial through, and he really would talk to his adorable cats. Mary would hold Tom and Jerry in turn up to the receiver to listen to Freddie talking. This continued throughout the years with succeeding feline occupants of his houses. -Freestone
Most of them were from rescue centers. We have a charity [in the United Kingdom] called The Blue Cross, which takes care of sick animals. Freddie got at least two from them. -Freddie Smith
Innuendo, the last album he recorded with the group, included artwork of Mercury dressed as a jester with cats on his shoulders. It also featured an upbeat song, titled Delilah. At first, listen, you may believe it’s about a woman – at least until the line about her ‘peeing all over [his] Chippendale Suite.’ He still is a cat person as opposed to a dog person. -Jacky
He had many cats and he gave them each a unique name, some of them were Tiffany, Miko, Oscar, Romeo, Dorothy, Delilah, Goliath, and Lily. His boyfriend Jim Hutton writes in his memoir about how cats had basically taken over their household and Freddie wouldn’t be calm until his cats were alongside him. While had also taken a liking to dogs, he was always a cat person at heart which is really clear.
She was a real character, that lady! Delilah was just kind of funny. She was a bit of a bully to the others, but was always first on his lap, first for food. The little princess of their home, the one he’d pick up and stroke the most often. She’d sleep at the foot of the bed, before slipping out for a nighttime prowl. -Jim Hutton
Freddie treated the cats like his own children. He would constantly fuss over them, and if any of them came to any harm when Freddie was away, heaven help us. During the day, the cats had the run of the house and grounds, and at night, one of us would round them up and bring them inside. -Mercury and Me
