Company policy and guidelines concerning promotion, performance appraisals, or salary raises are mostly the same across the board. However, there is always room for exceptional workers who often get given a raise or promotion before it is due. But that doesn’t mean you exploit that privilege and end up getting something much worse than a promotion or a raise.
That is exactly what happened in today’s story. Reddit user Funny-Bison255 shared that he works as a team lead for workers who are employed on a contract basis. Their contracts would automatically be renewed after 2 years, and they would also get an opportunity to negotiate a raise. One worker, though, named Sarah, wanted a raise before her contract was due. She ended up convincing OP for a 19% raise without any negotiation. At the time of signing the raise contract, OP refused and demanded an even higher raise. This frustrated OP and left him with no options, so he fired Sarah.
2. OP leads a team that works on a contract basis. Their contracts are automatically renewed every 2 years, and you can negotiate a raise at the time of renewal as well.
3. One employee, Sarah, whose contract was due to expire in January next year, requested a meeting with OP to discuss a salary raise.
4. She ended up giving a really good presentation.
5. It was so good that OP agreed to give her a 19% raise without negotiating. Same as Sarah demanded.
6. Sarah was confused that the meeting ended so early. OP promised he would have the raise implemented before the next payroll cycle.
7. OP convinced all the managing partners and got all the papers ready, however, when it was time for Sarah to sign the documents, she requested another meeting to discuss her salary.
8. She said she deserved an even higher raise. This pissed OP off. OP told her to discuss the next raise when it is due, i.e. after 2 years.
9. At lunch, she came into OP’s office to show him the three offer letters she had received, all paying her more than her agreed raise.
10. OP got frustrated and fired Sarah.
She had it coming. You never get on the nerves of a good boss. OP treated her so nicely and approved the exact raise she demanded, but when it happened, Sarah thought of exploiting the opportunity, and it backfired heavily.
There is no space for ungrateful people in professional workplaces. I fully support OP’s decision.
12. OP was going to offer Sarah her new contract on the next working day. He had no idea how the decision would work out so the matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.
13. In an update, OP cleared Sarah would be serving her time at the company until January.
14. Sarsh was working from home on the next working day so OP emailed the raise contract to her asking for it to be signed before 5 p.m.
15. She responded to the email and asked for the 2-3% extra raise once again.
16. OP ignored her response and emailed the managing partners that Sarah’s contract would not be renewed.
