I know that many teenagers work as babysitters as their first job. So you’d think it’d be the easiest job in the world. However, it can be difficult because caring for children is never easy. And, while we may refer to our pets as our own children, they do not require the same level of care that humans do. So it’s no surprise that especially these days, many people would rather adopt a pet than have children. But that doesn’t mean some people won’t lord their children over other people. When someone in your immediate family has a child, it can suddenly become your responsibility to care for the child as their aunt or uncle.
That is exactly what is happening in this situation. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with occasionally helping out your family. However, if you do not stand up to them, they will begin to take advantage of your generosity and will almost always leave their children at your house. OP’s cousin appears to be doing the same thing. And, while he dislikes babysitting, he does it to keep the peace in the family. When that same cousin demanded that he give up his cat, he had had enough and put his foot down. As you might expect, that did not go well, and now there is family drama brewing.

It’s clear that he doesn’t want to hurt the kids’ feelings and wants to keep the family together. Even if the cousin had to cancel her plans, insulting someone when they don’t do what you want is heinous. Even if he wants to babysit her kids in the future, he should never do so because if he gives in now, she will continue to treat him like dirt. I’m not saying that animals are more important than children, but everyone’s priorities differ. And since she is the one who desires so many children, why should he bear sole responsibility for her actions?
What do you think of him? Do you think he was too harsh and should have simply moved the cat to another room? Or do you believe he did the right thing by laying down his foot and standing up for himself? Have you ever been in a situation like this before? What did you do, if so?
