Bride Gets Called Ableist After Disallowing Friend To Bring Their Guide Dog To The Wedding

There is a subreddit called AmItheAsshole (AITA) where people post about the situations they are in asking people if they the bad guy in the story or not. Recently, a bride posted in that subreddit asking if she’s the a*shole for not allowing her friend’s service dog at her wedding because she has severe allergies. People gave her some pretty darn good reasons why she wasn’t. In fact, they explained how she and her friend both are disabled as severe allergies also count as disabilities. A sticky situation here.

Hiring professional aid for a day seems like a pretty good idea though.

Surely, you can try to convince people but you certainly can’t force them.

Conflicting access needs, that’s what it’s called.

If it wasn’t for her allergies, she would have never done it.

This is quite a difficult situation. The bride clearly has a solid reason for not allowing the dog to the wedding. After all, it’s her big day. She can’t ruin it by sleeping during the ceremony. Although we do understand the sentiments of the disabled friend, she’s furious and thinks her friend is being an ableist, but in the light of the situation considering one of the options laid out by the bride, it would be a wise decision for her end. The bride really wants her friend to attend her wedding. As she mentioned, it will be an intimate ceremony. That means not many people would be invited, only close friends and family. Since she’s on the close friends list, the bride would be extremely happy if her friend is there to celebrate her big day.

Your wedding day is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. All friends and family should cooperate.

Health and well-being are always a priority.

So generous of the bride to offer all that help for her friend.

Allergies also count as disabilities and no, they can not be switched off for a day.

Perhaps, you can visit your friend after the wedding someday as she is not open to any alternatives you suggested.

Disabilities exist in various forms.

People with disabilities can sometimes also be ableists.

Wedding days are all about celebrating the union of two people in love. It is clearly the couple’s day and they deserve to enjoy it to the fullest. No one has the right to make it all about them and their comfort. We sincerely hope that the disabled friend finds a better solution to this situation and attends the wedding.
