Teen Feels Like A Fake Daughter After Dad Says He Adopted Her To Babysit His Toddler, Gets Schooled By Redditors

Adopted children have a difficult time.

Adopted children frequently face unique challenges when adjusting to a new family dynamic. Assimilation can be a complex and emotional process for both the child and the adoptive parents, involving navigating various sets of expectations and values and developing a sense of belonging. Even with the love and support of their new family, adopted children may struggle to fully adjust and find their place in their new environment. Not only that, but one hurtful word from you will make them believe you don’t consider them to be your real children.

I always say, “You can’t unring a bell.” And what I mean is that once you say something, you can’t take it back. I understand that everyone makes mistakes, and you can always apologise, but that doesn’t mean the other person will forget what you said. Adopted children are particularly vulnerable, especially if they have recently lost their parents. Even if you are going through a stressful situation, there are certain lines that you should never cross.

However, there is one line that the original author of this story did cross. Scroll down to find out for yourself.

Not everyone is a big fan of babysitting, and a no should always be understood as a complete sentence.

This whole fiasco started when OP was faced with an emergency and needed to find a babysitter for his daughter.

When none of the options worked, he asked his adopted niece to babysit his daughter, which she wasn’t willing to do.

In a ‘desperate’ moment, OP said that he only adopted the niece because of free labour.

He instantly regretted it, but it was too late to take it back, so he bought her some gifts on the way back.

However, he soon realised that the niece had given all of the gifts to his daughter instead, and she was emotionally hurt.

He seems to be truly remorseful, and he assured the niece that he hadn’t meant what he had said.

The niece apparently knows that OP loves her, and he wants her to feel at home with him.

She still wasn’t fully sold, so OP returned the previously brought gifts and went shopping with her.

It seems that OP is trying his best to rectify the situation.

I don’t see anything wrong with asking her to babysit the child, especially since it was an emergency. However, once she said no, OP should have considered another option. I am sure he could have brought the two children with him. I understand it was a tense situation, and he is aware that he made a mistake, but that is no excuse.

The niece will always feel unwelcome, and she will assume that this is the OP’s true feeling. I obviously don’t know what he thinks, but this was a bad decision, and I can only hope the niece feels better after therapy.

People in the comment were not very forgiving, though.

Everyone was against the OP.

And a lot of people called him out for his horrible behaviour.

I am surprised that this is where his thoughts went first.

Nobody should say something like this to a kid.

Therapy might be a good choice in this situation.

Dealing with a stressful situation isn’t a very good excuse.

I am surprised that he didn’t just bring them both along.

It would be a good thing if he and his niece got therapy to address this issue.

It is pretty obvious that he is in the wrong.
