Father Asks If He’s Wrong For Letting His Son Avoid A Special Needs Child In The Family

parenting-fi

Being a good parent is one of the toughest challenges anyone can face. It’s harder than becoming a successful businessperson or excelling in any job. Parenting requires soft skills and intuition more than hard skills.

Parents constantly juggle different options, make tough decisions, and not only teach themselves but also teach their children what is right and wrong. This can be especially daunting when parents themselves are unsure if they are making the right choices.

Take the recent case of Reddit user Normal-Plastic-7514, who shared a story about a difficult decision he had to take between respecting his son’s boundaries and dealing with a neighbor’s special needs child who was causing problems for his own child.

1. Let’s find out!

2. Every Saturday, OP and his two kids go out on a dad walk, where they also meet other neighbors who catch up on stuff while their kids play around in the park.

3. Recently a new family moved in. The mother had two sons just like OP. He made sure to inform the mother about the every-Saturday meetup among the neighbors just in case she wanted to join.

4. When she arrived at the meeting, everyone was quick to realize that one of her sons, Aiden, was a special needs kid.

5. When the kids played with Aiden, they noticed he was very loud.

6. OP’s son, Sam, felt his movements were a bit too loud for his liking so he asked his dad to leave and OP abided.

7. The next day, Aiden’s mother showed up asking OP to teach Sam about differently-abled people to which he agreed.

8. Same thing happened next Saturday. Aiden would get a bit too excited for Sam’s liking and he would back away.

9. When OP’s wife invited the new mom along with Aiden and Kyle, both Sam and Kyle, OP’s other son, after they left revealed they didn’t enjoy the company of those two.

10. On the next meetup, Aiden ended up breaking Sam’s toy. Sam wanted to leave. OP decided not only to leave but switch their park walk to the afternoon when Aiden would’ve left.

I understand that Aiden doesn’t have control over his emotions but as a good father, OP needs to prioritize the needs and happiness of his children. And by leaving every time Sam would ask, and switching their park walk to afternoon, I think OP has shown great character as a parent. What is the point of these dad walks when the children aren’t having any fun, right?

11. A few weeks later, some other neighbors switched to the afternoon timing as well which led OP to believe none of their children were happy in AIden’s company either.

12. When Aiden’s mom found out about this, she got really angry and confronted OP.

13. OP shared that his sons made it clear to him that they didn’t enjoy AIden or Kyle’s company. That was enough reason for him to honor their boundaries.

14. OP believes as far as his children are respectful to Aiden and Kyle, he doesn’t care about them being friends.

15. The matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.
