Isn’t it amazing how one man came up with so many of the most widely used parenting ideas? Naturally, I’m referring to Dr. Spock. Not the Star Trek Dr. Spock, but Dr. Spock who authored the most significant parenting work of the 20th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care revolutionized child care and taught parents to view their kids as unique persons with unique needs. Parenting manuals before Spock advised parents to follow a strict routine and to show their children little to no affection in order to prevent them from being spoilt. Spock advised parents to be flexible when raising their children and noted that each youngster worked at their own pace.
