Having friends is essential for our emotional health and overall happiness. Friends provide us with support, companionship, and a sense of belonging, all of which are necessary for our mental health. Building and maintaining strong friendships can improve our lives in a variety of ways. Friendships can also boost one’s self-esteem and confidence, as well as provide opportunities for personal development. Friends can provide valuable advice, perspective, and encouragement when we are facing life’s challenges.
However, in today’s fast-paced world, it can be difficult to distinguish between true friends and those who only want to use us for their own gain. Whether through manipulation, deception, or simply taking advantage of our kindness, the presence of these so-called friends can be detrimental to our health and relationships. It’s critical to recognise toxic relationships and learn how to set boundaries to protect oneself. After all, you won’t even know you’re being taken advantage of. However, the original poster for this story realised this and left as soon as possible.

It is clear that OP’s friends believed they could take him for a ride. That is essentially the only explanation for their behaviour. It is perfectly acceptable to bring along friends, but no one should be responsible for paying for their meal. That is why splitting a bill down the middle is a bad idea. The best way to ensure that everyone is treated fairly is to only pay for what you ordered. That is exactly what the OP did, so I do not believe he was out of line. However, informing them before he left could have been a good idea.
