Everyone’s depression is unique.

Depression is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition that affects people in unique and individual ways. While some may feel sad and hopeless, others may suffer from irritability, fatigue, or physical symptoms. Recognising that everyone’s experience with depression is unique is critical to providing support and empathy to those dealing with this difficult illness.

Depression does not manifest the same way in everyone, and that is perfectly fine. When some people think of depression, they envision people who don’t shower or take care of their physical selves and are unable to go to work. While this may be true for some people, it does not apply to everyone. Depression can manifest in a variety of ways, affecting people from all walks of life. That is why all of us, including employers, must be a little more kind. However, there are times when you need to put on a fake smile, particularly when it comes to work.

COVID-19 changed how we all view our work and commute to work.

Employee Meeting

It also made it difficult for people to get back into the way of things since we were so used to remote work as well.

OP is a supervisor, and they have to take care of 15 employees who work under them.

One of them, named Annie, was always a problem, as she never dressed professionally and her dogs were always running around, even in Zoom meetings.

Things didn’t change when everyone was working from the office, and she still dressed unprofessionally with dog hair all over her clothes.

At this point, OP was tired of it and told her to either change her clothes or clean the dog hair off with a lint roller before she came into the meeting.

OP was trying to be gentle, but she instead decided to take sick leave and stomped off from work.

The story didn’t end there, as she started blasting OP all over social media, citing that she was dealing with depression and separation anxiety.

Apparently, dressing professionally in an office setting is an archaic way of thinking, and everyone in the comments was dissing OP.

OP is not sure whether he did the right thing now, so he decided to ask Reddit for their judgment.

OP also updated their post, making sure to let people know that HR was not involved in anything up until now.

I honestly feel bad for everyone involved in this situation. It is clear that the OP was unaware that the woman was experiencing depression and anxiety. And, while I sympathise with her, there is no excuse for throwing a fit because your boss told you that you needed to look presentable. Don’t get me wrong, depression can make you not want to get out of bed, but the woman in this story should seek help rather than blame her employer for everything.

People in the comments were mostly on the side of the OP.

Most people agreed that she needed to be written off for her unprofessional behaviour.

It’s not even about the dress code anymore.

A lot of people deal with mental health issues.

I do feel bad for her, but she did blast her workplace on social media.

To be fair, OP wasn’t too harsh when they asked her to use a lint roller.

Most people do care about looking professional at their workplace.

This may seem harsh, but it is also correct.

I cuddle my cat a lot, and that is why I always use a lint roller when I go outside.

We at least have to try, right?

What are your thoughts on the entire drama? Do you think the OP is wrong for telling the employee to change her clothes or use a lint roller? Or do you think the employee is making a big deal out of a simple request? What would you have done in this scenario?
