Faith can be extremely personal for an individual.

Faith is a deeply personal and intimate expression of one’s beliefs and values. It has a significant impact on how people navigate life’s complexities and seek meaning in their surroundings. Despite being influenced by external factors, faith is ultimately a unique and personal experience for each individual. Just because you adhere to a particular school of thought does not imply that your personal feelings and moral values are consistent with it. Nobody should be able to judge you, as long as you are not causing harm to others.

Freedom of speech is unquestionably a good thing, but some people take it too far, believing that it is acceptable to trample on someone else’s right to exist. Your skin colour, nationality, or religion should not distinguish you from others. It is critical to remember that diversity is what keeps the world interesting and beautiful. Embracing diverse viewpoints and beliefs can result in a more harmonious society in which everyone feels accepted and valued. While it is a lovely idea in theory, the reality is that many people struggle to accept those who differ from them. This can lead to a variety of issues, particularly at work.

That is exactly what is happening at the OP’s place of employment. Scroll down to see for yourself.

Being respectful of someone’s faith and nationality really isn’t that difficult.

It is never okay to discriminate based on something like nationality or faith.

OP is an Indian who currently works in the US, which is apparently really common.

OP hasn’t been in the US for long, so when he was invited to a barbeque by his boss, he let him know that he was a vegetarian.

OP asked his boss whether he should bring his own, but the boss said his wife would take care of it.

Most people had arrived earlier, and there was no vegan in sight, so OP socialised with a beer in his hand.

Rather than apologise, he asked his wife why she had not cooked something for the only vegetarian guy there.

Things only got worse when his boss’s boss tried to get him to eat a burger, which OP vehemently refused to do.

The OP made it clear that it was okay and that he would eat something later on.

The boss’s wife was drunk at this point as well, and she asked why OP had come to the barbeque in the first place.

Then she took it a step further and hurled rac*st insults at him.

The people around them also saw nothing wrong with the remark and laughed along with her.

He walked out of the party, but he was asked to apologise the next day.

OP didn’t care that he didn’t have any food to eat; he simply did not like his boss and his wife’s behaviour.

Some of his co-workers are saying that they should apologise to keep the peace rather than make a big deal out of it.

To be honest, I’m horrified by the boss’s and his wife’s behaviour. Being drunk is no excuse for misbehaving with an employee or anyone else. I don’t believe he was being disrespectful either. As someone who spent years as a vegetarian, I understand people calling you disrespectful for not eating their food, but this is a new low. And the audacity to demand an apology when you should be on your knees so that the OP doesn’t sue you for discrimination is astounding. I hope OP finds a better place to work soon.

Going to HR quickly might be warranted in this case.

The boss is definitely an idiot.

The OP was very understanding, which I would not have been.

Even his wife was on a power trip that day.

I have to agree that things will get worse for OP even if he apologises.

It might be better to just find a new job at this point.
