Religious beliefs should be kept outside of professional settings.

In today’s diverse and inclusive society, religious beliefs are frequently viewed as personal and should not be imposed on others in professional settings. Keeping religion out of the workplace can contribute to a more harmonious and respectful environment for all employees. It is critical to prioritise professionalism and respect for all people, regardless of religious beliefs. I understand that free speech is important, but as long as no one actively suppresses your voice, we can all practice our religion at home or in places designated for that purpose rather than at work.

After all, it is important to understand that you will meet a variety of people at work, so it is not advisable to assume someone’s religion, even if the majority of people in your country share similar religious beliefs. It is critical to maintain an open mind and acceptance of different beliefs in order to foster a harmonious work environment. Respecting diversity allows us to create a more inclusive workplace in which everyone feels valued and appreciated. Things get worse if you bring your religious beliefs to work.

There is no place for personal religious beliefs at work.

The OP is not sure whether they did the right thing by responding the way they did.

OP has worked at their current job for three years, and most of their communication is done via email.

There is one person who always ends their email with ‘God bless you’ and quotes scripture, which the OP isn’t fond of.

OP has nothing against anyone’s religion, and they were raised by Muslim parents even if they aren’t religious anymore.

After a while, OP mentioned this to their boss, but he didn’t take it seriously and told OP to ignore it.

That is exactly what OP did, and they continued to ignore it for almost two years until one day it became too much.

When one day OP was having a bad day, OP decided to end their email with an As-Salaam-Alaikum.

OP was called into their boss’s office almost immediately for mocking someone’s religion.

OP asked the boss whether he even knew what the saying meant, which the boss didn’t and had just assumed it was religious.

OP threw the boss’s words right back at him, as it should be okay for him to do this since his co-worker did the same thing.

Only a few days later, a company-wide email was sent where nobody was allowed to talk about their personal religious beliefs.

This ended with the particular co-worker calling the OP an a**hole, and thus they aren’t sure whether they did the right thing.

I’m not sure if the person was doing it on purpose or if they were simply used to talking about scripture all the time, but I believe they kept doing it because no one stopped them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with discussing your religion, but only if the other person has specifically asked you, and the workplace isn’t the best setting for it. Not only that, but what the OP said was not even religious; it was simply another language. Ironically, the boss made such a fuss over a simple greeting when he was fine with what the other employee was doing.

Not very forgiving of them, is it?

I am certainly going to use this saying in my life at least once.

They should have stopped it from the get-go.

Okay, that would have been hilarious but also not recommended.

To be fair, there is no mention of God in the saying at all.

It really is as simple as that.

I don’t think the OP was wrong for doing it.

While it may not have been super-professional, sometimes that is needed.
