Woman Explains The Misunderstood Difference Between A Kill And No-Kill Shelter

Everyone hates “kill shelters” but contribute to the reason they are considered “kill shelters.”

Some people are really proud of the fact that they do not support kill shelters. They do not donate to them, volunteer there, or adopt from any of them. They think this support would be morally wrong as the shelter is allowed to kill animals. However, they are causing more harm than good by doing this. If you love animals, it is very important to understand how these shelters work and what we can do to save the lives of the innocent beings living there. Educating ourselves on these things can help save a lot of lives. While I understand the sentiments behind not wanting to support a shelter that euthanizes animals, we need to know the reason why this happens. It does not happen because the people there like killing animals. Our society is part of the reason it has to happen and we can work together to stop it.

A woman on Twitter wrote a thread explaining the difference between a kill and no-kill shelter that is highly misunderstood by people. She went on a seven-tweet rant to explain the importance of supporting kill shelters. It might sound absurd right now, but wait till you see the reasoning behind it. The woman said that we need to give equal support to both kill and no-kill shelters.

Municipal shelters have to bring in animals even if they have no more capacity.

Private, or no-kill shelters, can refuse to accept more animals into the shelter once they have reached their maximum capacity.

People boast that they would never support, volunteer for, or adopt from a kill shelter. However, that is exactly the problem.

If people would just adopt from the shelter, there would be no need to euthanize the animals in there.

Kill shelters actually have volunteers that love and care for the animals just as much as no-kill or private shelters do.

She went on by saying we should support all of our local shelters, regardless of whether they are kill or no-kill.

If you really think about it, the woman’s tweets really do make sense. If we hate the killing of these animals so much, why can’t we just prevent that by adopting the animals living there who are desperately waiting to go to their forever homes? It is not the fault of the animals that they ended up in a kill shelter.

The woman also explained that the thread does not include the exceptional cases of overly aggressive animals or incurably sick animals that sadly have to be euthanized. That happens in both kill and no-kill shelters.
