When you get a cat, you might think you own the cat, but instead the cat owns YOU! That’s just how it works with these felines. Whatever their soft paws touch instantly becomes part of their territory. Now, it can be your home, your car or even a small shop at the corner of the street! Yes, that’s right. They are called bodega cats.
Bodega cats are basically cats that live in small shops. Shop-owners often keep these cats as a way to prevent rodent infestation. Well, of course, that’s not the only reason. Customers also enjoy shopping in the company of a feline friend. Having a cat around not only attracts customers but also helps to ease anxiety and stress.
There’s also a Twitter Account solely dedicated to bodega cats. People send them cats they find in convenience stores and they upload the best ones on their account. Check out some of their funniest and cutest photos below:

While these bodega cats are absolutely wonderful, they’re actually illegal to keep. According to The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, they can contaminate food. “Any animal around food presents a food contamination threat,” a rodentologist told the New York Times. “And so that means anything from animal pieces and parts to hair and excrement could end up in food, and that alone, of course, is a violation of the health code.”
However, a lot of shop owners still keep these cats even though it’s against the law. According to them, not keeping these cats would do more harm than good. They keep the environment pleasant and rodent free.
