For anyone who owns a cat, it’s hard not to fall in love with them once your bond of friendship has been made strong. Cats are loving, have the ability to read our emotions, our genuine feelings, and make us feel special with their need to be near us whenever we are around and about. Anyone who owns a cat must know the heart-warming feeling when he cuddles up to you in your hour of need. Whether it’s after a long tiring day at the office or when you’re burning low, cats have the ability to understand us like no other animal. With a simple touch of their paw or them licking you, when we look into their big eyes they melt our hearts with their cuteness. They are our partners in crime, loyal pals, and best buds in all situations.
One such situation arises in the story that we’re going to tell you today. Keep a tissue box ready, as you might need to wipe your tears. Here goes.
This story is about Kelly Nugent, who traveled from Miami to New York with her two Scottish Fold Cats, to take care of the person she calls her best friend. Evidently, that best friend happens to be her father. Unfortunately, Kelly’s father/best friend was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and that is when she decided to leave it all behind, pack everything up, and go and take care of her beloved father. She took the first flight she could get and went to take care of her father during his rigorous treatment for cancer. During this time, a peculiar thing happened. One of Kelly’s cats, named Sweet Potato (also known as Tato) got overly attached to her sick father. He used to stay by his side at all freaking hours and never left the sick man alone during his difficult time.
Let’s get into the story in detail! This might be an emotional rollercoaster for us all.

This happened a few months ago when kelly first found out about her father being diagnosed with bone marrow cancer. As a daughter, she obviously did not want to be far away from her dad in such a tough situation.
This news was enough to make her move 1500+ Kms away and back to her dad with her two adorable kitties!
It felt like Sweet Potato knew that there was something wrong with Kelly’s father and instantly jumped at the opportunity of helping him get through his difficult time.
This is not merely a story. It is backed by investigations and studies. According to recent research, it was found that owning a cat can lower your stress levels which will improve your heart and mental health. It was also found out that owning a cat can actually lower one’s risk of various heart diseases, including stroke, by around 30 percent. So cat presence can have plenty of benefits for humans provided they have a strong bond.
In an interview, Kelly Nugent claimed that two months after the arrival at dads, Sweet Potato and her dad have been “attached at the hip”:
“It’s just the sweetest thing you could ever see because I know [Sweet Potato] can sense something’s wrong and that he’s needed,” She said. “So he kind of just stepped up to the plate and was like, ‘This is my job now. I’m gonna help heal you.’ It’s like he knew.”
“So my dad has a recliner that he sits in and he’ll put his arm on the recliner, and every single time, without fail, Sweet Potato will jump up and sit in the little cove in his arm and cuddle with him. He’ll sleep in his bed or in his room. Whenever my dad’s on the computer, [Sweet Potato will] jump on his keyboard. Whenever my dad is sitting at the table to do some of his paperwork, Sweet Potato will sit on the paperwork. He just has to be on top of him,” Nugent told in an interview.
Look at the impact that the cat has on his grandpa. He’s looking healthier and more fresh in his company. Cats are truly a man’s best friend and there couldn’t be a better combo.
This story warms our hearts with pride. How one cat helped a man get back on his feet. Cats are many times the first line of defense when their humans are in need, under the weather, sad, sick, or tired which is being proved with evidence in this story. Sweet Potato is just one such example of cat behavior and researches have shown that cats are no doubt very good healers.
Their mustaches look alike!
Focus on me instead.
This is what Nugent thinks about the bond between her father and cat: “I really think the emotional support of Sweet Potato and the cuddles and just being there—it’s had a huge impact on him.”
It’s the well-known (and scientifically proven) fact that interaction with a gentle and friendly cat has significant body and mind benefits. Pet therapy is really very important during modern times and it’s something that’s keeping us sane. A number of researches were conducted on the benefits of cats upon our health. So it’s always better to keep a cat around you folks! If this story isn’t proof enough, we don’t know what will be!
