Autistic Roommate

People on the autism spectrum can struggle with a variety of issues.

Individuals on the autism spectrum frequently experience difficulties in various aspects of their daily lives, including communication, social interaction, and sensory processing. These difficulties can vary greatly from person to person, making everyone’s experience unique. Some people may also struggle with repetitive behaviours or restricted interests. Recognising and understanding these challenges is critical for providing appropriate support and accommodations. It may appear difficult, but if you understand what they are saying to you, there should be no problems.

That is not to say that everyone is so easygoing; there will be people who deliberately provoke someone for no reason. For example, the original poster (OP) of this story repeatedly told his flatmate about his problems and what not to do. Not only that, but it didn’t appear that the OP was being overly restrictive or dictating what the roommate could do. However, the flatmate continued to create situations that put OP in difficult situations. As you can probably guess, this resulted in drama, and OP moved out without informing his flatmate.

OP moved out of his place and left his roommate without communicating with him first.

OP is on the autism spectrum and thus has difficulty understanding sarcasm.

OP has been living with his roommate for five months and has a habit of counting things, including food, stairs, lights, etc.

When OP moved in with his roommate, he was clear from the get-go about his requirements and how he didn’t appreciate people touching his food.

OP’s roommate respected his wishes for the first few months but then ignored him as time went on.

Even though OP talked to him about it multiple times, he kept doing it, and things reached a fever pitch a few days ago.

OP couldn’t take his roommate messing with him anymore and decided to move in with his parents without telling his roommate first.

OP’s roommate didn’t realise that they had moved out until he called OP in a very panicked state.

He was clearly angry, as he thought OP had decided to leave him in the dust over him eating a few strawberries.

Later on, OP did realise that he messed up and decided to pay his half of the rent for the month.

OP also made it clear that it is not that he can’t live with other people, as he has done so in the past.

People who are on the autism spectrum are absolutely able to live with other people as long as everyone is respectful of their boundaries.

This may go against the grain, but I will say that both parties in this story are incorrect on some level. Of course, OP’s flatmate is the bigger a**hole, as he continued to do things that he knew would make OP uncomfortable or cause him emotional stress despite being warned several times.

However, OP did not handle the situation effectively either, and as he admitted, this could lead to his flatmate losing the house. However, since the update, it is clear that OP is aware of this and has made every effort to assist his flatmate.

People in the comments had varying opinions when it came to this issue.

OP should have told his roommate.

Moving out is not a bad thing, but doing so without telling your roommate is certainly not understandable.

I will have to agree that it is a good thing OP moved out.

Even telling his roommate over text would have been enough.

The roommate is certainly in the wrong for disrespecting OP’s boundaries.

A fridge locker sounds like a great idea.

The roommate does have himself to blame for being in this situation.

What are your thoughts on how OP dealt with the situation? Do you think he should have told his flatmate that he was moving out? Or do you believe it is the flatmate’s fault for repeatedly provoking OP? What would you have done in this scenario?
