Misguided Teacher

Some people pretend to help others.

Many people appear to be helpful and altruistic on the surface, but their actions may actually cause more harm than good. Performative helping can have negative consequences and undermine the genuine intentions of those who want to help. It is critical to be aware of the potential harm that can result from deceptive actions masquerading as assistance. By being aware of the true intentions behind someone’s actions, we can better determine who is genuinely trying to help and who is acting for their own benefit. It is critical to prioritise authenticity and sincerity in our efforts to help others.

They are also the people who ‘help’ others simply to receive pats on the back from others, and they will publicise their good deeds to gain more attention. It honestly demonstrates how out-of-touch some people are. I’m sure we’ve all seen documentaries in which people visit third-world countries and only show the negative aspects of the country, ignoring everything else. Some people are so tone-deaf that they believe any area other than the ones on the level of Manhattan is impoverished. That is what the girl in this story appears to have thought.

Everyone has varying opinions on religious mission trips.

OP is in college, and they were expected to do a presentation about a life-altering event they experienced.

One of her classmates talked about when she went on a mission trip and helped out in an impoverished area.

OP themselves aren’t super religious, so they weren’t that interested until they realised it was their hometown the girl was talking about.

This obviously surprised OP, and they laughed out loud, which caught the teacher’s attention.

When the teacher asked what was funny, OP was only too happy to let everyone know that it was their hometown and not some impoverished area.

OP also asked around whether somebody had actually heard of her or the church group, but nobody had.

It is pretty clear that OP and their friends aren’t big fans of mission trips, and they think it is just rich people putting on a performance.

When the presentation ended, OP asked whether the girl actually knew anything about the area.

It was pretty clear that the classmate didn’t know much and stammered when it came to answering the question.

This started to make OP feel bad, as maybe the girl was just brought along on the trip.

After all, she might have been very young and didn’t really know if she was actually helping or not.

The teacher tried to be respectful towards OP’s opinion, but OP wasn’t sure whether they messed up or not.

I’m surprised OP was able to hold herself back as much as she did. If it were me, I would have been irritated by how the girl was portraying everything in a false light. I understand that it was just a project at the end of the day, but the OP was not wrong to bring it up or interrupt the presentation. However, I understand where the teacher is coming from; she simply wants to keep the peace and quiet in class, so I’m not surprised she stopped OP before it got any further.

People in the comments were quick to clear up some misconceptions.

I wouldn’t really say that OP was an a**hole.

To be fair, I would have giggled a bit as well in that situation.

I wonder which town it was that she helped.

Asking her after the presentation alone might have been a better choice.

I wonder if she actually understood what happened.

I wonder what her thought process was when she decided to make the presentation.
