While MLMs are not illegal in the same way that pyramid schemes are, they are a way to avoid the law, and MLMs fall into a legal grey area. An MLM differs from a pyramid scheme in that it usually provides some kind of product or service. Most of the time, however, it is just an excuse to recruit more people and build a large downline. That is the only way people who are involved in MLMs can make any money. Even so, it is usually not much, and you would be much better off working a minimum-wage job. MLMs, on the other hand, are great at luring people in with big promises that never come true.
As a result, it’s no surprise that the only way they can hire new employees is to trick them into thinking it’s a different job. I’m embarrassed to admit that I once went to an interview and didn’t realise it was an MLM until later, and thankfully I didn’t fall for the scam. This person had the same thought process, so despite being ‘hired,’ they declined the position. The manager, on the other hand, didn’t get the memo and called them every Monday or every other day because they weren’t coming in. I’m not sure how broken the chain of command must be in this company for the manager to miss the hint every time.
