The majority of parents have to come up with lies as a tactic to change their children’s behaviour, end a public meltdown, or avoid an awkward conversation, whether it’s “the candy store is closed” when you want to limit sweets for your kids or “storks deliver babies” when you aren’t yet ready to explain how babies are made. Although lying to your children may seem cruel, it is occasionally the only way to handle conflicts or temper outbursts. While being truthful is crucial to earning your child’s trust, it is occasionally permissible to stretch the facts, especially if it aids in discipline.
Everyone has undoubtedly spoken a falsehood at some point in their life. Sometimes we do it to avoid upsetting our family members, particularly our kids who aren’t always ready to hear the whole truth from their parents. The funniest lies that readers and editors of Parents have told their children were solicited from them. And let’s just say that there is a lot of lying about TV shows and the ice cream truck. But hey, we don’t pass judgement!
At defused, we’ve discovered some shrewd parents who have done an excellent job of lying to their children.
There is nothing wrong with telling your child occasional little white lies. In other situations, such as the ones involving Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy, lying might keep children on their best behavior if they know that the presents beneath the tree are on the line. Other times, these tiny lies are the only thing necessary to persuade young, obstinate minds to turn in the right path.
In other words, you’re OK as long as you make sure to clarify before they enter high school that consuming watermelon seeds won’t truly change them into a watermelon. An ice cream cone and a sincere apology is always good.
Of course, we don’t recommend hiding the truth from your children because the tiny white lies we’ve listed below are more like inflated versions of the truth that are presented in an intelligible manner. And while these tiny lies may occasionally be used to persuade your misbehaving child to do something he would rather not, other times they may just be used to test the child’s sense of humor.
