In this scenario, a woman in her mid-30s is part of a long-standing group of friends from high school, most of whom are still without children. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the group resumed its monthly dinners, opting for takeout and outdoor settings. The woman, a single mom with an immunocompromised daughter born in 2019, has limited options for trustworthy babysitters due to her daughter’s health concerns. When she hosted a dinner with her daughter present, her friends later informed her that they had collectively decided her daughter should no longer be included in their gatherings.
A subsequent conversation with one friend revealed that the group believed the woman should prioritize finding babysitters to maintain her individuality and spend child-free time with them. The woman pushed back, expressing her difficulty in finding reliable sitters and feeling that her identity as a mom was being undermined. This led to a heated argument, with the friends insisting that she needed to make more effort to join dinners without her daughter. The woman, feeling condescending to her, refused to apologize and now faces the challenge of balancing her responsibilities as a mom with the desire to maintain long-standing friendships.
So keep on scrolling down below to read the whole story narrated by OP and make sure to read it till the end otherwise, you won’t be able to tell if OP is an A-hole or not.
1. OP has been a part of group friends since high school and she’s the only one in the friend group who has a child, they go out for dinner once a month but due to COVID, she has postponed many of these dinners.
2. OP’s daughter was born in 2019, and she did not have to deal with figuring out the babysitters for her moreover, OP said that her daughter is immunocompromised and there’s a small number of people she trusts to watch her. So OP agreed to host a dinner but told her friends that her daughter would be there unless her mother was available.
3. OP’s mother wasn’t available that night to watch her daughter so she was there during the dinner, she didn’t cry but she stayed with OP the whole time. Afterward, OP received a call from her friend in which she said that they discussed it and decided that OP wasn’t allowed to include her daughter anymore. Then OP said don’t expect me to come to every dinner then.
