While HOA is supposed to be for the people of the neighborhood and to help them, it is more likely that you will see them enforcing arbitrary rules and imposing ridiculous fines. Many people who join HOAs do so solely for the power that these positions provide. This also gives them an excuse to target their disliked neighbors. The HOA members are supposed to be objective, but when are humans not biased? So seeing a story like this does not surprise me in the least. After all, I’d be more surprised if the HOA was portrayed as the hero of a story.
After a particularly bad hurricane, this family desired to build a metal roof for their home. They weren’t sure if that would be possible because the HOA did not allow metal roofs. Granted, this was a very old rule, and the metal roofs mentioned in that law were not built in the same way that metal roofs are built today. Despite this, the HOA went after this family even after they tried to get permission and do it the right way. As it turned out, the HOA was only interested in raising funds for the neighborhood sign, and the best way to do so was to fine people. This did not sit well with this family, so they decided to take action.
