Boss Gets Upset After Employee Told Him That He Was Not Obliged To Answer His Calls 24/7

You must read your job description letter thoroughly before signing the offer letter. You must know what responsibilities are being bestowed upon you. Ideally, this shouldn’t be required, but our planet is filled with terrible bosses. Bad bosses like to treat their employees like slaves and get the most out of them by paying the bare minimum. Legally, you are not supposed to do anything outside your JD at the office. Similarly, you have to do everything mentioned in your JD, including abiding by the working hours.

In today’s story, we see something similar being reflected, as posted by Reddit user Red_Beard84. Being the sole expert on the equipment they used in the Company, OP would often get phone calls from his boss or workers, after office hours, to help them fix an issue if something went wrong. OP didn’t like to attend office calls after hours, but he would still do it out of courtesy.

That was until one night he received a call from a worker at 1 a.m. for an issue he needed to have resolved. OP helped the guy out in less than 5 minutes but it ruined his sleep and also woke his wife up. The next day his supervisor tried to grill him for not wanting to help out his coworkers. This led to a mega confrontation with OP trying to make his boss realize that they cannot depend on him all their lives.

1. Let’s find out!

2. OP is one of those workers on whom the entire workplace depends.

3. Although OP works 7 to 4, he still receives calls from coworkers after hours for any help they need.

4. OP doesn’t like being called after hours but he still answers out of courtesy.

5. One time, OP’s phone started ringing at 1 am. It was a worker who had an issue that only took 5 minutes to resolve. The call was short, but it ruined OP’s sleep.

6. The next morning, OP’s supervisor, John, argued why he wasn’t picking up the call.

7. OP got a bit angry and said the workers cannot rely on him all the time and expect him to be there all the time.

8. OP intimated that the workers will have trouble reaching him in the future as well because he does not like attending work calls after hours.

When the office hours finish, they finish. Does OP’s JD mention he is supposed to take work calls after hours? I don’t think so. I am sure he wouldn’t have accepted the offer if his JD said that. After-hours are for family, friends, and most importantly, yourself.

I am not up for a life where I have to ruin my already troublesome sleeping pattern for some people I have no personal association with. If this continues, OP should leave! They depend on him, he must take advantage of that.

9. When the boss said that OP was required to have a phone on him all the time, OP went off, saying he was not obliged to work for them after his duty hours were finished.

10. OP proposed he get promoted to a new position with a JD that said he must attend work calls after hours and a salary to match that responsibility.

11. The conversation ended at that. Fearing he may suffer some consequences for his actions, OP took the matter to the courts of the AITA community to get a clear view.

12. In an update, OP shared that he had been documenting everything, including all the after-hour calls, just in case matters were taken to HR and OP had to prove his side.

13. Wow, the boss is firm on that stance.

14. OP also shared that the company provided a corporate discount through the carrier they all used, and that is what the boss made the base to say he must answer the calls.

But OP doesn’t use that plan as he has a family plan subscribed to the carrier.
