The new boss seemed to fit in well and was very hardworking. It’s hard to determine whether OP was in the right or wrong in this situation since we don’t know what was said or what kind of situation they were in. However, it would have been better to hold a private meeting with the person in question to express their honest thoughts without shaming them in front of others. Even if the intention was to be supportive, no one likes to be criticized in public. From the looks of it, it seems that OP didn’t mean any harm, and nothing was said with malice.
