However, were you aware that the scale of rating can go beyond the usual metric? The WeRateDogs account on Twitter has shown us how our canine friends can make the numbers go beyond 10. Why, you ask? Well, because their infectious smiles, adorable antics, and cheerful personalities are worth it. We can’t even imagine rating a dog less than 10 because, for us, all dogs are made equal, while some are cuter than others, but we can’t take any points away from our canine buddies.
The founder of the account, Matt Nelson, who’s also an entrepreneur, has taken up the task of rating dogs in hilarious comments that will get a smile out of you. His witty comments and ratings have given a new entertaining twist to the idea of rating our canine friends. We’ve curated a list of some of his best content from Twitter, so be sure to scroll through the list and we guarantee that it’s going to put a smile on your face. Be sure to also pay attention to each comment from Nelson, the way in which he rates our puppy friends is extremely entertaining.
Matt, the founder of WeRateDogs, isn’t some small-time entrepreneur, he’s making big bucks and a decent living, rating dogs. He’s also using his influence for a good cause, leveraging it to raise funds to help dogs. With Matt, dogs come first, and it’s not about being greedy, but giving back to the canine community in the best way possible.
In November 2015, Matt started the WeRateDogs account on Twitter and he dropped out of university shortly after, as he became more dedicated to the project. The doggos were cutting into his time at the university and he decided to solely focus on being an entrepreneur.
Once he started the account, he followed it shortly after with an online store where he could sell merch. Matt then became the head of one of the most beloved dog communities online. It wasn’t easy, since all of this fame took him two whole years of struggle to reach. Turning a small startup idea into a canine community that we know and love wasn’t a walk in the park.
After Matt made an account on Applebee’s, he had over 3k followers just a day later and people were dying to get the ratings of their puppers, from him. That’s what you get when you bring an idea that’s relevant to the community and get lucky at the same time.
However, Matt couldn’t focus on his studies, since rating dogs took all of his time. Soon, Matt couldn’t continue, he was burned out, didn’t sleep much, and was posting 18 times a day. And even though he had a lot of influence online, IRL he was broke! His friends even had to take his phone away at parties, because he was always checking his Twitter feed.
“I was spending full-time work hours or more monitoring everything about the account. Monetizing it became a necessity if I was going to continue doing it at that level,” he mentioned. That’s when Matt met up with social media marketer John Ricci who convinced Matt to share the workload.
“That told me that I need to be a good delegator if I’m not going to go crazy,” Matt explains how he couldn’t do everything as a one-man team. At the same time, he also dropped out of university so he could solely focus on the WeRateDogs venture.
All of Matt’s work can be managed from his phone, but despite the fact that he’s swimming in money by providing us with amazing doggo content, he’s still one of the most humble guys you’ll meet.
At this time, WeRateDogs has over 8.9 million followers on Twitter, 1.9 million followers on Instagram, and half a million supporters on Facebook. That’s a huuuuuge following for Matt, and it’s well-deserved since his content is so quirky and wholesome.
And his business model is stable because we’ll never stop loving our canine friends. However Matt’s success cannot only be attributed to luck, but he also grew his canine empire over time and it doesn’t look like he’ll stop growing anytime soon.
There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that goes on into making WeRateDogs a success. Keeping his millions of followers entertained is not an easy task. Nowadays, Matt tweets twice on the weekdays by himself.
For Matt, considering his experience with the content, it only takes him 20 minutes to create the perfect comment for each doggo photo. And once the tweet is out, he carefully monitors the audience’s reaction to it, after all, he is a professional dog rater.
“My initial goal was just to make people happy. Now I’m good at writing like a dog and embodying that behavior because I’ve been surrounded by dog internet culture,” Matt explained. His main income source is the merch website, however, Twitter eats up almost all of his time.
