Woman Loses Love For Baking As Retreats And Staff Only Cared About Her Cookies And Not Her
Respect and recognition. Two very important things every single person is looking for after they make full efforts right from their core to do something for others. If I am working in a company and am performing beyond my potential every single month, I would like to be acknowledged for my efforts. That’s the biggest incentive that acts as the main motivating factor that would keep anyone going on and continuously outperforming themselves.
However, when you do not get respected for your hard work, you feel discouraged. You do not put that same level of effort the next time because you know there is no one out there who is going to recognize it so what is the point? Most of the time the output gets all the honoring and acknowledgement but the person who created that output gets ignored.
Something similar happened with Reddit user u/girlfieri223. She used to work for a quilt shop and would make food for the retreats. Her specialty for her chocolate chip cookies that everyone would love. Cookies were something she would make out of her heart for everyone and wasn’t been paid by the owner to make them. However, problems arose for OP when she would never get recognized for her efforts. No one would ever ask about her and would always be interested in her cookies. Half of them didn’t even know her real name. This got her bored of baking cookies for the retreats. She wanted to stop doing it because no one cared about her, only her cookies.
OP turned to the sacred and infamous subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if she would be wrong to stop baking cookies for the retreats and staff. Scroll down below to read the story!

1. Let’s find out!

2. OP works part-time for a quilt shop, mainly for the retreats by cooking for them. She gets paid by the owner for the ingredients but not for the chocolate chip cookies that she bakes for everyone.

3. OP makes delicious chocolate chip cookies, and the owner uses them to attract more people to buy a retreat spot.
I don’t think anyone would ever say no to a free chocolate chip cookie.

4. OP does not get paid for it, she baked them and brought them for everyone out of her love for baking cookies.

5. One key thing OP shared was that every time she would enter the shop on retreats, everyone would crowd her up asking for the cookies. No one would ever ask how she is. Half of them don’t even know OP’s name.

6. I personally think some people may find that slightly respectful and the same may be the case with OP.

7. They all just want the cookies and OP believes her presence doesn’t matter one bit at those retreats.

8. This made OP stop wanting to bake cookies for those people anymore.

9. OP doesn’t find any fun in baking the cookies for them anymore because she feels forced and doesn’t even get paid for baking them.

10. Before making the final decision, OP put forward the big question before the AITA community to know if she would be wrong to stop baking her delicious chocolate chip cookies for the retreats.

Here are some of the comments shared on the story:
11. You were doing it out of courtesy, on your own. So the decision to stop doing it any more fully lies with you as well.

12. It may work, not bad advice. OP can try.

13. There is definitely nothing wrong with talking. OP should talk to her boss and explain what she feels to her.

14. Even if they had said “You did a great job baking these cookies”, OP would’ve never made this post. Recognition is all she wanted.

15. You can always find a new job and work with better people who acknowledge the efforts you make…and know your real name.

NTA. Why would OP even put forward this question? Baking cookies is something she did out of passion, out of her love for baking. She brought those cookies for the retreats and staff because she is a really kind person. All she needed was someone to tell her this, that she is very kind for bringing everyone cookies. But no one did it and that is enough to k*ll anyone’s motivation to do anything they are doing out of courtesy.
Honestly, it is OP’s decision but I would advise her to stop baking those cookies. Those people do not deserve her effort. Actually, I would suggest she starts looking for a new job. Work where people would actually value her.

After over one and a half years, OP shared an update on the original story:
16. OP told her owner she was not going to bake cookies for the retreats anymore along with the reason.

17. The owner didn’t like OP’s decision. She said she would lose business if OP stopped baking cookies as that’s what the retreats come for.

18. The owner kept trying her best to convince OP to bake cookies for her retreats but she stood her ground firmly.

19. Retreats were even willing to pay her to get her to start baking again but things had gone far beyond money for OP. She started applying for a new job which shows that she was done with the quilt store.

20. OP is actually a licensed pharmacist. The reason why she didn’t work in her primary field is that it grilled her and the exhaustion of the work ended her motivation to work in that field.

21. But after leaving the quit store and taking a much-needed break to regain her mental health, OP decided to continue working in her primary field.

22. And within a month, she landed a job as a pharmacist at a prison.

23. OP absolutely loved working there and with time even found her lost love for baking cookies.

24. Everyone at the prison knows OP by her real name and she loves to bring cookies to give to everyone who pays her a visit at the pharmacy. She is extremely happy to be where is is now.

29. I know right? That owner seriously needs to reconsider her business strategies.
