This apparent “Typo” was rather offensive for someone working with a master’s degree. Not just that, in the interview the managers and HR discuss all the things said on the contract before signing because then it becomes a case under labour and contract law. It becomes a breach of contract if anyone does something that said otherwise on the contract since it is binding and this can get the company or the site in a lot of danger as exploiting your employee with misinformation can lead you to be fined or even worse, jailed.
Such a case happened with this girl who shares her story, which is about how she got a master’s degree in Library Science which has limited job availabilities since there are only so many libraries. However, talking generally many others shared their opinions on the experience she had to face.
Her degree seemed to have accounted for the extra 10$ which got her rather excited to sign up for the job.
My personal advice would be to not quit at this point, keep going sister, you got this! Something is better than nothing sometimes.
This is a breach of contract and since the documentation says 20$/hr, it is her legal right to ask for that money and get that for the month she has worked there because that’s her lawful right. Just because it was the HR’s typing error doesn’t explain any valid point of view to come up with excuses since it has already been read and signed by her…
At the end of the day, the thing is that what is in writing is always more concrete than verbal agreements. Where is the evidence to prove the verbal agreements?
Who wouldn’t want to work there and just sneak in a nugget every now and then? The degree is tough to fulfil all your needs while making it hard to find a job in that field too.
People surely had to face somewhat of the same experiences in different fields of work because of a mistake that HR makes while writing up the contract for the job. I’m sure there must be many other interesting stories that happen in our daily work that would be an informative discussion. We would like to know if there is any other advice you might have for her!
