Ideally, all employees give their company 14 days’ notice before they leave and move on.
Consider it a sign of cooperation. You let them absorb the news, and provide them with room to make certain required changes before you say your final goodbye and move on to greater opportunities. Many employees give a larger notice, say a 4-week notice. This is usually done when the worker has a team working under them and they all are collectively working on a project. You want all things to be smoothly done and don’t want the transition to disrupt the working environment. But we also have rationales from people who don’t even give a 2 week’s notice and want to leave the organization as soon as possible. This happens when the organization is mentally damaging you and staying there for even a single more day would ruin your hopes in humanity. So yeah, we’ve got all sorts of notices.
In today’s story, we have an employee who gave their company a 2-week notice before leaving but it actually got rejected. Their boss wanted the employee to give a notice of at least 4 to 8 weeks. They further got accused of causing damage to the company by leaving so close to the holidays.
Confused, the employee headed to the subreddit Anti-Work to know if the whole situation made sense or not.

1. We gotta read through the details to know if she really can impose this or not.
2. OP got a new job and gave a 2-week notice to their current company but the boss didn’t like it because it was too close to holidays and it felt like some sort of a scheme, to her, sabotaging the company.
4. The boss insisted on providing a 4 to 8-week notice but OP couldn’t wait for that long as they had a new job waiting for them and they had a starting date to honor.
OP needs to know if the company’s policy clearly states that an employee has to provide a 2-week notice before leaving, then no power on this planet can make her increase that period. It’s a 14 calendar days’ notice, as far as my knowledge reminds me, so all that fuss about legal proceedings and ruining the business are to weaken you emotionally. None of that stuff is going to work. Just wait for the 14 days to be over, leave this dumb place, and start with your new job.
People had some questions to ask and OP was happy to answer them all:
11. OP got advice not to let any information leak out regarding where she is going.
