An employee of any sort of organization is its best asset. Everything sort of depends on them. Yes, we say without any customers, the business won’t make any money. But who is going to attract the customer in order to buy from your business? It is all the employees you have hired to work effortlessly and collectively to make your business fly. So, it is very well established that if you are a boss, you must provide all the value to your employees as much as possible, you must recognize their efforts, you must appraise them, compensate them, and retain them because you never know your one stupid act of firing that one employee on whose shoulders the entire business’ appeal depended on could drain the whole business down.
In today’s story, we have a diner employee who got scolded by their manager for not satisfying the need of a trucker who had come in to drink a “big coffee”. The employee responded by saying they only serve coffee in standard 12 oz styrofoam cups. The manager told him to just get him a coffee in a 30oz soft drink cup but there was no option to charge for that in the coffee register. The manager, right on the spot, forged a new rule out of thin air that the employees can now serve customers in the 30oz cup if they demand a big cup of coffee. OP was super surprised to hear that and without having any option to further say anything he served the trucker the big cup of coffee satisfying both the trucker as well as his manager, but definitely not himself.
In order to satisfy himself, OP decided to maliciously comply with her orders and decided to serve all customers, who asked for coffee, in the 30 oz soft drink cup but kept charging them only for the 12 oz cup. The bigger coffee, being three times the size, quickly gained demand and almost everyone started ordering from that point onwards. OP kept serving it in the big cup while making no profit. Now, this is how you maliciously comply with your boss who is not ready to do business properly.

Well, when you try to be a manager on the spot just to look cool, this is what you get. The manager clearly should’ve, respectfully, told the trucker that they don’t serve coffee in bigger cup sizes than the 12 oz cup they got served coffee in. The situation would’ve ended with an angry trucker, at the very extreme. Creating a whole new rule just meant inviting the employee to use up his brain cells to come up with such an idea to infuriate his manager.
It was all the manager’s fault.
